Kidney stones are one of my favorite topics to help reiterate the importance of natural healthcare. Why? Kidney stones cannot be prevented by anything other than natural methods. But how complicated are these “natural” methods? Drink lemon water! It’s that simple!
It’s estimated that within the U.S. approximately 10 to 15 percent of adults will be diagnosed with a kidney stones during their lifetime. Approximately one million Americans develop kidney stones every year. Once you’ve had a kidney stone attack, the chance of recurrence is 70 to 80 percent. Kidney stones can be very painful often leaving victims in the hospital for days waiting for the stones to pass.
What is a kidney stone? A kidney stone is typically the result of excess minerals and acid salts in your urine, such as calcium and uric acid, which crystallize and form solid masses. The most common cause of kidney stones is not drinking enough fluids, especially water. Kidney stones can also be caused by prescription drugs, your diet, or other factors leading to highly acidic or highly alkaline urine.
How can I prevent kidney stones? One of the main recommendations to help prevent kidney stones is to drink 8 to 10 glasses of water each day and add freshly squeeze lemon juice to this water regularly. Lemon is high in citrate, which helps prevent kidney stones as it breaks down calcium and mineral build up. Lemon juice also helps the body to absorb much needed calcium, which assists in preventing osteoporosis. Additionally, lemon juice aids in proper digestion, helping the liver rid itself of impurities and break down fat. This is essential for both proper health and maintaining appropriate weight.
Why should I take steps to prevent kidney stones? More than likely, you’ll be unaware you have a stone until it moves into your ureter, the tube connecting your kidney to your bladder. At that point, you’ll more than likely end up making at least one visit to the doctor. Symptoms could then include pain in the side and back below the ribs lasting 20 to 60 minutes, bloody, cloudy or foul-smelling urine, pain with urination, nausea and vomiting, the persistent urge to urinate, and even a fever or chills due to infection. If drinking a few glasses of lemon water each day will not only help prevent kidney stones, but also provide many other health benefits, is that a great alternative to a painful visit to the hospital!
“The doctor of the future will give no medicine, but will interest his patients in the care of the human frame, in diet and in the cause and prevention of disease.” ~ Thomas Edison
